On October 3, I interviewed four people on campus during my writing class. The subject of the interviews was writing and social networking.
The first person I talked to was an Asian student. She said she didn't write a lot, and didn't use Twitter or blog. However, her favorite form of social media was Facebook. So far, same as me... Besides, she doesn't do reflective writing except for essays in class. She thought the advantages of reflective writing might be practicing English and improving grammar skill.
The second person was an old lady. She doesn't use social networking very much except for e-mail. She does think any types of reflective sort is important and reflective writing is a skill that people need to practice.
The third person also doesn't use Twitter or blog. Her favorite form of social media is instant messages. She hardly does reflective writing; however, she uses only a notebook when she does because it is very personal thing. She thinks it helps her to sort her thoughts.
So far, all of the sample don't use Twitter, blog or diary. Therefore, I wasn't sure how Twitter was popular here because many people talked about Twittering, but actually, I thought not so many people might use it.
The last person writes on a blog but not very often. She said she used approximately once a month. Her favorite social media is Facebook & blog. She does reflective writing whenever she feels like doing it. She thinks it is good ways of recognizing what she accomplished and what she wants to be.
I don't write so much actually, yet I use Facebook a lot. When I post some comments, I usually just write one or two sentenses because it is a kind of diary for me. Of course, it is open-space, so I cannot write everything what I want. However, I can post some pictures at the same time. In fact, looking at pictures and reading / writing comments at the same time helps me recall many things. In addition, it is really easy to post a simple sentense and I can enjoy reading other people's comments on my post.
Marisa, I enjoyed reading this post, especially the part about how you use social media!
ReplyDeleteAs for Twitter, my personal feeling, based on my small circle of friends, is that Twitter is mostly for people trying to establish a journalistic or commercial presence online. Journalists, in particular, seem obsessed with Twitter, and they write about in the newspapers constantly. For ordinary people, I think blogs and Facebook are both more popular.
As you mentioned, Marisa, I really have the same opinion as you that I find the Twitter is not as popular as I thought before. In my interview, most of people do not use Twitter usually!
ReplyDeleteI think facebook doesn't have enough privacy, but it is a very convenient way to contact with people from all over the world.
ReplyDeleteAlso, your writing is very well orgnized:)
People want to believe words have a power. I have been one of them. However, without strong energy,we can't write, even a small easy writing like Twitter.
ReplyDeleteMarisa,
ReplyDeleteAbout the popularity of Twitter, I actually felt opposite to your impression. When I was in Japan, I was suspicious of its popularity because not many people around me used it. However, through this interview, I found that it's probably more popular than I thought since 3 out of 4 have Twitter account. The interviews by other students showed different results so I cannot say which view is correct, but at least, I think Twitter is more popular here than in Japan.
By the way, I like the elderly woman who prefers notebook when she writes. Although I don't really do that, I think it's lovely.
